BALEADAS
Baleadas are one of the most well known and popular Honduran fast foods. The basic baleada is a thick flour tortilla folded in half containing refried beans and grated queso duro (a hard salty white cheese), and mantequilla (a white sauce much like sour cream). A bolibaleada includes scrambled egg, although sometimes you can add avocado or meat for an extra cost.
Baleadas are widely available at casetas (food stands) and comedores (small restaurants). They are almost always made fresh while you wait. Baleadas are typically eaten for breakfast or dinner, but are served just about anytime.

RECIPE
Ingredients:
2 cups of wheat flour
1 cup of water or tepid milk
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup oil
Combine all the ingredients in a large container. Knead the mixture until it is completely mixed and not sticky. Divide the dough in balls of the size of a golf ball. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Heat a pan on the stove over medium heat. Take each ball of dough and stretch it on a flat surface to make a large tortilla. Place the dough in the hot pan and cook until it just begins to brown in spots (approximately 2 minutes). Turn the tortilla over and cook the other side.
Once the tortilla is cooked, fill with your choice of refried bans, cream, cheese, avocado, or egg, and fold the tortilla in half. |
